The bursary is\r\nfor first year, and non-renewable. Background: These bursaries were created by\r\na gift from Dorothy Corrigan, LLD (Hon), O.C., a life-long resident of\r\nCharlottetown. Dorothy Corrigan attended Prince of Wales College where she\r\ntook the commercial course. For two years she was employed in the office of\r\nthe Charlottetown Hospital and at the end of that time she entered the school\r\nof nursing there, graduating with her R.N. Dorothy followed the nursing\r\nprofession in Charlottetown and later in Montreal where she married a dentist,\r\nDr. Ernest Corrigan. They returned to Charlottetown to live. While bringing up\r\nher son and daughter and running her household, Dorothy was involved in\r\ncommunity affairs and was periodically involved again in the nursing\r\nprofession especially at times when there was a shortage of nurses. In 1958 a\r\ngroup of Charlottetown citizens asked her to put her name on the ballot for\r\nthe civic election. Although she was defeated in that year, she was elected in\r\n1960, was unopposed in the next three elections and offered for Mayor in 1968.\r\nShe served as Mayor for three years. Because she had served on almost every\r\ncommittee in council, Dorothy was well qualified for this position. The\r\nletters, gifts, souvenirs, etc. throughout her home indicate that the people\r\nwere more than satisfied with her efforts. During her term of office as mayor\r\nshe was involved in many social functions, conventions, meetings, visits of\r\ndistinguished guests etc. She was in the company of Queen Elizabeth and Prince\r\nPhilip at the Royal Ball at Confederation Center and on another occasion was\r\npresented to the Queen Mother. After eleven years on City Council, Dorothy\r\nCorrigan undertook a new challenge. She was employed as Public Relations\r\nofficer at the Charlottetown Hotel. During this time she served on many\r\ncommittees such as Gold Cup and Saucer, Holland College advisory committee for\r\nPolice Academy, St. Dunstan's University Board, and served three years on\r\nCanada Council. She also was president of the Charlottetown Chamber of\r\nCommerce. Her awards for her contribution to community affairs include:\r\nHonorary Degree from University of P.E.I.; Honorary Membership in Royal\r\nCanadian Legion; Honorary Membership Student Union of P.E.I. and the Order of\r\nCanada. Dorothy Corrigan, who has an extensive knowledge of community and\r\ncivic affairs, is highly esteemed in her native city and province." }, "open_date": null, "date_time_created": "2018-01-31T22:49:13.566295Z", "is_atila_direct_application": false }, { "name": "Esperanza Education Fund Scholarship", "description": "Applicant must be born outside the U.S. or have two parents born outside the U.S.\r\nApplicant must be planning to enroll full-time at an accredited public college or university in the academic year the award is offered.\r\nApplicant must be either a graduating senior at a high school in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia or a recent GED grad residing in DC, Maryland or Virginia\r\nApplicant's total family income must be less than $100,000 per year", "slug": "esperanza-education-fund-scholarship-kxisdoax", "id": 159, "img_url": "https://ucarecdn.com/e1864271-b990-4e9f-b5d4-ade7bd009ad3/esperanza-education-fund-scholarship.jpeg", "deadline": "2020-06-01T23:59:00Z", "currency": "CAD", "funding_amount": "20000.00000000", "metadata": { "old_criteria_info": "Overview Scholarship recipients will be selected based on qualities\r\ntraditionally valued and demonstrated by the immigrant community: hard work,\r\nresourcefulness, perseverance in the face of adversity, academic achievement,\r\nleadership, and commitment to one's community.
