Applicants must be seniors attending\r\npublic high schools in New York City’s five boroughs or the surrounding New\r\nYork counties. Each year, FSCNY awards cash grants to outstanding high school\r\nseniors from public schools in NYC’s five boroughs and the surrounding\r\ncounties. Through the Scholarship Program, FSCNY and MoneyGram International\r\nprovide educational opportunities for young people - many of whom return to\r\ntheir communities and contribute to improving the quality of life for all New\r\nYorkers. In 2017, seven students from across New York City’s five boroughs\r\nreceived over $35,000 in scholarship money and prizes. Students are selected\r\nbased on academic achievement and leadership skills they demonstrate at school\r\nand in the community. Since the Program’s inception in 1996, $788,000 in\r\nscholarships have been awarded, helping 324 deserving students attend Ivy\r\nLeague and other top-tier universities and colleges. Eligibility/Criteria:\r\nApplicants will be considered based on the following criteria: · Academic\r\nachievement; · Demonstrated leadership in their school; and · Demonstrated\r\ninvolvement in their community, contributing at least 50 valuable hours of\r\nvolunteer service each year of high school. An essay of the following topic\r\nmust be attached to the application: In 250 words or less students should\r\nexplain their most rewarding experience through their community service\r\ninvolvement. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED The Awards: Several\r\nscholarships, including the William Siegel Scholarship and Gene Schott\r\nScholarship Awards, will be issued to selected recipients consisting of a one-\r\ntime cash award to be applied towards the cost of their freshman year of study\r\nat an accredited two or four-year college or university. The cash award for\r\neach of the selected winners will range between $2,000 and $7,500 based on the\r\nrecommendations of the Selection Committee. Candidates: who have obtained Canadian citizenship or who\r\nhave applied for permanent residency in Canada are not eligible; already\r\nparticipating in an exchange scholarship program funded by the Government of\r\nCanada are not eligible; already enrolled in a degree or diploma program at a\r\nCanadian university or college are not eligible; and must be enrolled full-\r\ntime at a post-secondary institution in an eligible country and paying any\r\ntuition fees regulated by that institution at the time of application and for\r\nthe full duration of the exchange. Terms and Conditions The following terms\r\nand conditions must be met during the period of the scholarship. The Canadian\r\npost-secondary institution must: be recognized by its provincial or\r\nterritorial government; waive tuition and/or academic fees for selected\r\nstudents, as scholarship recipients must be registered full-time and paying\r\ntuition to their home institution; inform both the candidate and their home\r\ninstitution of any mandatory fees that, in exceptional cases, cannot be\r\nwaived, prior to applying for a scholarship on the candidate's behalf; enter\r\ninto an agreement with the recipient stating that: funding for the scholarship\r\nis provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development\r\n(DFATD); the recipient must provide the Canadian institution with records to\r\naccount for major expenses such as travel and lodging; and the recipient\r\nagrees to have their contact information shared with DFATD, for reasons such\r\nas: to be invited to join the Government of Canada Scholars’ Alumni\r\nAssociation (GCSAA), to attend events organized by the Canadian Embassy or the\r\nHigh Commission in their home country and by DFATD in Canada, or for\r\npromotional and statistical purposes; and provide qualitative and quantitative\r\nreports during the scholarship period. Scholarship recipients: must engage in\r\nfull-time studies or research as defined by the Canadian institution; must be\r\nproficient in the language of instruction at the Canadian institution (English\r\nor French) before their arrival in Canada, as the scholarship does not cover\r\nlanguage training; in pharmacy, medicine, dentistry or other health fields are\r\nexcluded from clinical training or clinically-oriented research involving\r\ndirect patient-care; may not hold any other scholarship granted by the\r\nGovernment of Canada; enrolled in courses must arrive in Canada by September\r\nfor the fall semester or by January for the winter semester; conducting\r\nresearch must arrive in Canada for the uptake of their award between June 1,\r\n2018 but no later than February 1, 2019. Failure to arrive during this time\r\nmay result in the cancellation of the scholarship. In exceptional cases, and\r\nwith prior approval from DFATD, the arrival deadline may be extended to March\r\n1, 2019; must ensure that they have appropriate health insurance for the full\r\nduration of the scholarship, as per the policies of the Canadian institution;\r\nand must focus primarily on full-time studies or research during their stay in\r\nCanada. Important information: For college and undergraduate applications, a\r\nwritten institutional collaboration and student exchange agreement or\r\nmemorandum of understanding between the Canadian institution and the\r\ncandidate’s home institution is mandatory. For graduate applications, an\r\ninter-institutional agreement is desirable but not mandatory. If there is no\r\nexisting exchange agreement, graduate applications which involve a new or\r\nestablished collaboration between professors from a Canadian institution and\r\nthe candidate's home institution will be accepted. Applications submitted\r\ndirectly by a candidate or their home institution will not be accepted.\r\nScholarships cannot be deferred and are not renewable. Priority will be given\r\nto candidates who have not previously received a scholarship under the Canada-\r\nCARICOM Leadership Scholarships Program, the Canada-CARICOM Faculty Leadership\r\nProgram, the Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Scholarship or the Emerging\r\nLeaders in the Americas Program.
